Shameless plug
Come see my better half, Michael Weinreb (also known as MW), at the Court Street Barnes & Noble tomorrow night (6/30) at 7 p.m., as he reads from his excellent book, Girl Boy Etc.. He'll also be autographing copies after he reads, so buy a book and bring it to the reading!
Cheryl shops...Century 21
Since the weather was so nice last weekend, instead of going to a museum or doing something else of cultural interest, MW and I decided to walk to Century 21. This was MW's first time, and I think he was slightly overwhelmed. "Everything is either for Eurotrash or golfers," he remarked as we walked through the men's department--and it was a pretty fair assessment. If you're a guy, it also helps if you're ridiculously skinny (size 30) or on the large side (38), as we discovered when sifting through the Diesel and Seven jeans. MW was impressed with the men's underwear selection, but he turned up his nose at most of the "ugly" button-down shirts.

I then hustled us up to the third floor (I like to work my way down at Century 21), which was an absolute zoo. MW hung out by the escalators and read his book as I ventured into the fray. Pretty much everything in the European designer section is on sale, and thus everything is grouped by item of clothing and size, rather than by designer. If you have patience for this sort of thing, go for it; I prefer to shop by designer, so I lasted about five minutes before I headed over to the "contemporary" side of the floor. They have a lot of Earl Jeans, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Juicy, Seven, and Joe's Jeans; that section is still mostly grouped by designer. But nothing really caught my eye.

We then hit the second floor, only to discover the shoe section had been moved. Now, before I bitch about the new shoe section, I will say that in Century 21's defense, the second floor is a lot more orderly and less cramped without the shoes. However...you have to follow these red footprints, which lead you through the children's section to the stairway. You then descend two full flights of stairs in an all-gray, dingy, poorly lighted stairwell, to emerge in the "new and improved" shoe department. One good thing I will say is that now all the shoes (men's, children's, and women's; regular and athletic) are in one place. Also, you can reach the shoe department from the street. But the rest of it sucks. The department is even more cluttered than before, with sometimes 10 different styles in one section of shelving. The sale shoes are spread all over the place, along the walls. The shoes are in no order whatsoever, even though the walls read "pumps," "sandals," etc. And speaking of sandals, you have to descend yet another flight of stairs for women's sandals--although I certainly spotted several pairs of sandals on the main floor. The "lucky size section" is nowhere to be found, and the designer shoes are set back in hard-to-reach shelves (they were way more accessible when they were on tables). Finally, the only ways to reach the shoe department are down through the weird stairwell or directly from the street--so if you want to go back into the main store, it's up two steep flights for you. ("What if you're handicapped?" I wondered. "Well, you probably don't need to buy a lot of shoes," MW said.) So, "new and improved" shoe department: not so much.

Sadly, this was the first time ever that I went to Century 21 and didn't buy anything. Granted, I'm not a big fan of clearance-sale time, and I didn't want MW to be bored to tears--I can easily spend two or three hours there. But, of course, to quote everyone's favorite governor, I'll be back.
Buy it: moccasins
If you're a regular Cheryl Shops reader, you know that I've been on a mad, unsuccessful search for the elusive Miu Miu high-heeled moccasins, which, after this post, I will stop talking about, because I realize I'm being a bit OCD about the whole thing. Anyway, Miu Miu was also offering a flat version, which some stores still have in, like, size 36, but most are sold out of as well. While the flat ones are nowhere near as cool as the high heels, they're a hell of a lot comfier. Also, they're $300. So I found these on the Minnetonka website, for less than $30. They also carry the Thunderbird, which I wore religiously when I was in elementary school. Or there's the two-button boot, favored by Doi, my favorite babysitter. (Her name was actually Carrie, but for some reason I called her Doi. Don't ask.) I'm going to venture to say that moccasins are the new Uggs. They're both very comfy and a bit on the ugly side. But like I said with the Uggs, when trendy yet comfortable footwear comes along, run with it, no matter how aesthetically unappealing it is. And that, dear readers, concludes my last-ever mention of the Miu Miu high-heeled moccasins.
Website of the week
While on my hunt (in vain) for the high-heeled Miu Miu moccasins (by the way, if anyone knows where to find these in, say, a size 38.5, please let me know), I came across Raffaello Network. While at first glance this appears to be your typical random website offering slight discounts on Gucci bags from five seasons ago, Raffaello is slightly different: It offers slight discounts on this season's luxury merchandise, as well as that of seasons past. Witness this season's "sold out" Gucci It Bag, $100 off its original price of $800. Prada travel bag? Check. Chanel crystal logo sunglasses? Check. Miu Miu high-heeled moccasins...er, not quite. But they have practically every other style from Miu Miu's spring line.

Now, you're probably thinking, "Why tell me about this site now when spring/summer merchandise is 50% off in the stores already?" Well, first, because sometimes the stores don't have what you want, and, second, because Raffaello already has fall/winter merchandise--some of which is up to 30% off, and most of which isn't even in stores yet. See how that works? You can be carrying next season's It Bag even before Vogue's editorial assistants duke it out in the fashion closet. You can thank me in a month or two.

Cheryl shops...Forever 21
To make up for the fact that I was extremely lazy yesterday (i.e. no postings), I'm introducing a new feature here at Cheryl Shops called, well, Cheryl shops... It's a more clever way of saying "Cheryl reviews," basically. Since so many new stores open here on a regular basis, I'll, of course, be reviewing them. I'll also revisit places that have been around for awhile, just to see how they're doing. Hey, it's an excuse to go shopping as "research."

So, first up, I went to the brand-spanking-new Forever 21 store (on 34th St. between 5th & 6th Aves.). Forever 21 started in--where else?--California in the '80s and, after much national expansion in the mid- to late-'90s, is finally hitting Manhattan. (I believe the 34th St. store is the first to open in Manhattan, and one in Union Square is coming soon.) To sum up the store in one sentence, I'd say it's Bebe style at sub-H&M prices. That's right, I said sub-H&M prices. I did not see one thing in the store that cost more than $20, and, believe me, I looked. However, as I can tell you from having worked at Contempo Casuals for two summers, cheap prices come at the cost of fabric--i.e. the clothes are freaking tiny. I'd say 90% of the stock is sized small/medium/large; I'm a size 8 in big-girl clothes and I was, shall we say, straining many of the larges. Also, I had butt-cheekage in several skirts (seriously, who wears 14-inch-long skirts?). So if you're a size two or four and petite, jackpot for you!

As for the store and what's actually in it, there are two floors, with a third still under construction. The first has a lot of black club-type clothing (halters, backless tops, slinky fabrics) in the front, and a section best described as "Juicy knockoffs" in the back. They have a pretty good rendition of the linen tie-dyed ruffle skirt, the velour tube (although their version--I hope--seems more like a top, too short for a dress), and various tees and tanks. The second floor has lingerie (microscopic underwear, definitely too small for my ass); handbags, most of which are vinyl, but cute; accessories, of which they have a much better selection than H&M, at even better prices; a pretty big denim section (which is where I found clothes with actual numeral sizes); workout-type clothes; and some dressier clothes. Way in the back, it looks like they literally raided my closet: sheer button-down shirts, frilly camisoles, pleated skirts. They also have a rather impressive selection of ponchos for $12.80, which is an unbeatable price, especially in light of its trendiness. I also spotted some Ella Moss-type striped tops, skirts, and dresses, and, as you can imagine, they have a big selection of cropped cargo pants.

I didn't buy anything (I was a bit pressed for time), but judging by the lines at the cash register, their business was not hurting. I do want to go back for a few tops and maybe some accessories, though. Forever 21 is a virtual goldmine if you're tiny; for the rest of us, it's a good bet for trendy, disposable clothing at ridiculously cheap prices. Yes, that sounds a lot like H&M, but, hey, at least now we have options.
Labels I love
It's true what they say: Once you drive a Mercedes, you can't go back to a Ford. Once you live in a 3,000-square-foot townhouse, you can't go back to a 300-square-foot studio. Along those lines, but not on such a grand scale, is the lingerie situation: Once you wear La Perla, you can't go back to Victoria's Secret. Created in 1954 by Italian Ada Masotti and her son Alberto, La Perla combines the art of corsetry with the science of physiology to make the most flattering, gorgeous, best-fitting undergarments around. Moreover, they're made with the finest silk and lace, in incredibly innovative designs. So not only do you get undergarments that fit like a glove, but that make you feel like a goddess as well.

Of course, the gold standard in lingerie doesn't come cheap. Thankfully, La Perla has a range of lines, from Black Label (the most expensive; a bra-and-panty set runs about $400) to Occhi Verdi (the least expensive; you can get a set for under $100). And while there is quite a difference between the low and high ends, all the La Perla lines are higher-quality than anything you'd find at Victoria's Secret. That said, it's still pretty expensive. So I look for La Perla on eBay, Overstock.com, and Bare Necessities, which often has good sales. Other places to look for La Perla: Century 21, sample sales (of course I'll always list 'em), and the La Perla outlet store at Woodbury Commons, where I once bought a set for $40. (Of course, if you can afford full price, Barneys, Saks, Neiman Marcus, and eLuxury.com are all good bets.)

A note on sizing: Italian lingerie is sized 1-4, with the standard cup size a B (1=32, 2=34, 3=36, 4=38). If there's no cup size tag, assume it's a B; otherwise, you have to look for your cup size. Panties, slips, and such also follow the Italian sizing: 1=XS, 2=S, 3=M, 4=L. Knowing how the sizing works is almost like a secret language among lingerie afficionados. Ahh, cachet.

There's something to be said for lingerie that's so sexy and yet flattering and comfortable--wear a La Perla bra and you won't be worrying all day about whether you'll suffer a "wardrobe malfunction."
Website of the week
Last year, my friends in Chicago were pretty damn excited about getting an H&M store on Michigan Avenue. "H&M?" I said. "We've had those since 2000." And that's the way it usually is: Cool stores open in New York and migrate westward. One notable exception, however, is CB2, which has been open in Lincoln Park for several years now but is finally launching a website (and, rumor has it, expanding to New York, Boston, and other cities). Of course, opening in Chicago makes sense because 1) parent company Crate & Barrel started in Chicago and 2) they probably wanted to see how their product would "play in Peoria" (or Chicago--whatever, they're both in Illinois--close enough). Their experiment must've been a success, judging by the incredibly cool--and, for the most part, affordable--stuff on the website.

Basically, it's a younger, hipper, slightly cheaper, more colorful version of Crate & Barrel, much like Pottery Barn's younger sibling West Elm. The website is organized into cheeky, slightly unconventional categories: live, eat, work, sleep, splash, party, and me (or, living room, kitchen, office, bedroom, bathroom, entertaining, and personal accessories). As you can see, they have pretty much every aspect of your home design covered, and the volume of products certainly backs this up. In general, the design of the furniture is modern, with clean, simple lines (yes, as you probably guessed, I'm drooling over much of it). The flip-flop convertible sofa is a futon for grownups; the odyssey coffee table evokes Saarinen; and the elevaton bed is, design-wise, a step up from anything West Elm makes. The accessories are incredibly fun: I like the colored rings clock; the kado rib vases; and the shallow bowl. The "eat" section also has some great finds, like the mod pop dinnerware, Tokyo snack dishes, and red flower zombie glass. There are many more cool products; the site is definitely worth exploring (I've been taking a break every few hours to click through another section). CB2 has taught me a humbling, valuable lesson: Not all good stores start in New York.

Not so much: jelly explosion
Last summer, Steven Stolman a boutique in Southampton, began selling an Italian-made knockoff of Hermes' revered Birkin bag--but made from rubber, not leather (or ostrich, or crocodile, etc.). The bags flew out of the store, and Hermes responded with a lawsuit, which made the contraband bags even hotter. Retailers, who, due to the limitations of the design/manufacturing/distribution process, were somewhat slow to respond. Fast forward a year, to summer 2004: Jelly is everywhere. Sure, you can drop $165 on an "original" Jelly Kelly--which, due to Hermes' lawsuit, barely resembles its namesake anymore--but why bother when you can get this jelly clutch for $5 at Old Navy? And, hey, while you're at it, why not accessorize with a pair of jelly thongs from the Gap, sure to make your feet sweat? How about a jelly belt? Where are the jelly tank tops and jelly skirts? Coming soon to a store near you, no doubt.

Enough already. Retailers love jelly because it's incredibly cheap to produce (meaning they make a greater profit on it); that's why it's everywhere. And thus, you end up looking like a fashion victim. Accessories are one of the easiest--and most affordable--ways to show your individuality. While last summer Jelly Kellys said, "I summer in the Hamptons," this summer, they say, "I'm a fashion victim." So, Jelly: Not so much.
Website of the week
My coworker Andrew has this amazing-smelling lotion (a gift from his former coworkers) by mark. I did a little investigating and found mark.'s website...and lo and behold, it's a division of Avon! While it's an overt attempt to appeal to a newer, younger generation, it's a welcome one: mark. has a ton of cool products, and they're all cheap. There's Andrew's Garden Blu lotion for $10; much-needed butt-fixing cream (at $8, the cheapest cellulite cream I've ever encountered); and the interesting hair-minimizing deodorant for a whopping $2.50! As for makeup, the Story Book is a Stila-like kit (and at $20, half the price); crystal shimmer hook-up powder seems to encourage the aforementioned action ($5!); and I'm in love with the packaging for C-Thru-U Tint. There's also a skincare section with more affordable finds. But my favorite part is the jewelry and accessories: I love this cheeky In Love We Trust tote; this incredibly cheap and summery Beach Beauty bracelet; and the sequin wristband watch--perfect for a night of debauchery. Now I wonder what my mom is going to say when I tell her I'm an Avon fanatic.

Administrative notes
A special shout-out to reader Charlly, who let me know that TJ Max was selling my favorite Loop bag. Thankfully I hadn't ordered it from the website yet, so I was able to get it for $20 instead of $55. So if you want to cop my style, head on over to 6th Ave. and 18th St.

I finally got a chance to go to the Theory sample sale at Clothingline today on my lunch hour. If you haven't made it over there yet, I'd definitely recommend checking it out. They have a ton of merchandise and now it's all 75% off retail. There are a lot of pants, jackets, tops, even leather jackets. However, Clothingline claims it's this season's merchandise; that's definitely not the case, but Theory's designs are pretty classic, so nothing looks "so last year" or anything like that. But tomorrow's the last day, so hurry!

Pimp my ride
Last night when I was walking home from work, I saw an Escalade painted to look like the Gucci monogram fabric, complete with red and green stripe running down the middle. I looked around to see if anyone else noticed, but everyone was going about normally. I felt like I was on an episode of Chapelle's Show. The car was driving west on 37th Street, presumably back to Jersey.
The long-overdue Father's Day gift guide
Hey, you still have 11 days to find a present! But if you've bought one already, I'm very sorry for my tardiness. I'm going to take the low road and blame my job, which I'm not too fond of as of late. So if you or anyone you know is looking for a fashion writer/editor, please e-mail me. Anyway, on to the gift guide...For the sake of simplicity (and saving time), all of these gifts are good for pretty much any dad--as long as yours is as low-maintenance as mine is. Good luck, and happy shopping.

How many guys you know use a money clip for their bills but put a rubber band around their credit cards? (Sadly, I know quite a few.) Red Envelope's leather card case + money clip puts it all together without the bulk of a wallet.

The one appliance in our kitchen that my dad can operate is the coffee machine, however it's a Mr. Coffee circa 1976. For an updated, yet user-friendly, version, check out this Salton Melitta One coffeemaker, for which you pop in a cartridge and have a freshly brewed cup o' joe 60 seconds later.

Out on the course, nothing screams "My daughter is a fashionista!" like Burberry golf accessories. (Neiman Marcus also carries wood covers and golf gloves.)

Whenever it rained when we were up at our cottage, my dad and I would play cards (poker, double solitaire, hearts, etc.), and this 160-chip poker set would've come in handy.

Or if you're a board-game-playing family, any dad would appreciate this travel three-in-one game box.

I saw this and started laughing, only because it's so appropriate. In fact, it doesn't need much of a description, other than monogrammed steak brand. See?

You get the brand, and have your sibling buy this Smith & Wollensky gift set, which includes knives, a cookbook, and steak sauce.

Does Dad complain about going all the way upstairs to the kitchen for a snack while he's downstairs at his workbench? Get him this Hot+Cold Snack Box for beer and sandwiches at close reach.

Last time I was in Napa Valley, I brought back some Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon for my dad and he was so happy, he almost cried (except men don't cry). Do the same for yours with this gift set featuring Mondavi's 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon reserve, a fancy-schmancy corkscrew, and a nice wood box.

Real dads don't drink beer out of the can; real dads drink out of a Stag Horn mug.

Get Dad to ditch the Old Spice when you introduce him to the wonderful world of Kiehl's, via their Ultimate Men's Collection gift set.

Finally, if all else fails, get your dad what I'm getting mine: this book, about the U.S. Naval air campaign in WWII (my dad loooves WWII).

Website of the week
Every summer, I set out to buy three things, the more whimsical the better: 1) a sundress, 2) sandals, and 3) a fun bag. Sandals are never a problem, the sundress rarely happens, and the bag is, well, a mixed bag. But this year, only a few days into June, I have found my bag at Loop. New York-based Loop has been around since 1997, designing functional and, most importantly, affordable bags for many purposes. Their materials range from vinyl to satin to suede; prices rarely go above $100; and the styles are so cute, I could buy at least one from each line. Some of my favorites: My inner 8-year-old loves this Delux Travel Kit; the Joji Sling is a little bit disco; the Corrine Shoulder bag comes with a little version and looks like cool retro wallpaper; the Courtney Guitar Strap Bag is perfect for the girl rock star in your life (or within you); the Shenyang long clutch is great for a night on the town; and this PVC tote is just plain cool. You can also find crazy stuff like this light box and pubic stencils. Loop is a company that clearly, happily captures the eccentric styles of NYC (and, for the record, I'm buying this bag).

Website of the week
I will admit I'm a bit of a dreamer. I dream about being able to go into a store like Jeffrey and just point at the stuff I want while salesgirls follow me around the store like puppy dogs. I dream of having an oceanfront beachouse, preferably in Montauk. And I dream of having a huge loft apartment that I can fill with midcentury and contemporary modern furniture from stores like Unica Home. The store, located in Las Vegas, is a beacon of style amidst so much bad taste. And the website is even better: well organized--browse by category or by designer--and with a gift registry. While Unica has typical offerings from design giants Knoll, Kartell, Herman Miller, et. al., they also have stuff you won't see anywhere else, like this incredible (and, yes, a bit Vegas) mood light wall, garland light, and origo dinnerware. They also have incredibly rare (and, okay, expensive) items like this very mod ball chair. If you sign up for the e-mail list, you receive notice of monthly specials; this month, get 20% off all Cassina furniture designed by Le Corbusier (including the iconic chaise lounger). Plus, most orders over $100 ship for free--a nice way to avoid hefty furniture delivery costs. Now all I need is a few million dollars and I can start making my dreams come true...
