Website of the week
I saw my dear friend ES over the weekend, and in passing, she mentioned her cousin had started a belt company and asked if I'd mind checking out the website. I said yes, figuring I'd mention the site in the week in shopping or some such, but the site made me laugh so hard, I though I'd make it website of the week. The site is Montana Realty Co., which is neither based in Montana, nor a realty company. It opens with flash animation of, well, two kooky East Village hipsters. You'll just have to watch it for yourself. Anyway, they sell three belt styles, the Bonsai (a kung-fu-inspired style), the Buddha (self-explanatory), and the Sanskrit (which features sanskrit writing). All styles are webbed with a metal logo buckle, and each style comes in several different colors. I'm guessing these are supposed to be men's belts, but, hey, they look unisex to me. Oh, and they're a very reasonable $19 each, which is a small price to pay for the amusement this site provides.
America's Next Top Model recap
Because Kim got kicked off during last week's episode of America's Next Top Model, and since Kim was probably my most favorite contestant since Shandi, it was rather difficult to bring myself to watch this week's episode. Well, not really, but it was sad not having Kim there. (I am taking solace in the fact that a lot of the girls who don't win end up having solid modeling careers, so hopefully that will happen for Kim.) The show certainly made up for her absence by featuring both Simon Doonan, the hilarious creative director of Barneys, and Barbara Hulanicki, the creator of Biba and often considered the godmother of the Mod look (I worship her). Simon gave the girls a history lesson on modern British fashion while alternately hinting that the girls look like strippers and hookers. Love him! The girls were then given 150 quid to purchase four outfits (Mod, punk, preppy, and Bollywood) to wear to four different go-sees. Nik won this challenge, and her prize was 100 frames at the next photo shoot; Nicole got 80 frames; Jayla got 60; and Brie got 50, plus she had to go first and she couldn't look at herself in the mirror. Harsh, no? But before this photo shoot, the girls had to pair off and take a walk with each other through London. Cut to Jayla and Nik settling their differences (remember the "I'm afraid of the dark and I sleep with a nightlight" incident?) and Bree and Nicole kissing and making up. Awww. The next day's photo shoot had a Bollywood theme and was shot by judge Nigel Barker, who, as it turns out, is half Sri-Lankan. Bree had a migraine and, for some reason, took Benadryl for it, so she was totally out of it for her shoot, but Nik and Nicole both rocked it. Jayla, not so much. And while it came down to Jayla and Bree in the end (all of a sudden, the judges are very concerned about Bree's height, even though Nik is the same height--5' 8''--and Nicole is only an inch taller, plus the last two winners, Eva and Naima, have also been on the short side), Jayla got the boot for being a cold fish...which should have happened like three weeks ago, but whatever.

So now it's down to Bree, Nik, and Nicole, and next week is the finale. MW thinks Nik has it in the bag; I don't care, just as long as Bree doesn't win. I still don't like the girl, sorry. But, even though next week is the last episode of ANTM, it's also the season premiere of...Project Runway! Yay! Look for recaps of both next week.

Anyway, eat some turkey, and rest up for Black Friday. (For a non-fashion preview of the deals, hit this site.) I'll be shopping in New Hampshire (tax-free!) and Boston, and will have a full report next week. Happy Thanksgiving!

Sample sale report
I was really looking forward to the Sigerson Morrison warehouse sale; apparently so were a lot of other girls. Due to quarterly strategy meetings at work, I knew I wouldn't be able to get down there until today after work, but thanks to my coworker JB, I didn't even have to make the trip! The intrepid JB was there at 9 a.m. yesterday morning...and the line was three blocks long (girls toward the end of the line reportedly waited two hours to get in), so JB figured she'd try again today. This morning, there was no line, but there was also no merchandise left at all, and they're not restocking--yes, Sigerson Morrison is completely cleaned out. But, hey, that's okay--I'll hit the store during their "crazy sale" (or the 50% off week right before) in January.

Still feeling the need to hit a sample sale, I swung by Lutz & Patmos, which is probably my favorite cashmere label--they make really flattering cuts in cool styles. I also like this sale because it's totally civilized--there were about three or four other women there, quietly browsing the racks while jazz music played softly in the background. Anyway, the sale started Tuesday, but they still have a lot of stuff left--Friday is the last day, and prices go down to 70% off. They have two racks' worth of fall 2005 merchandise (you can preview it on the website), and while I had a hard time making a decision, I ended up going with a two-tone gray striped sweater from a past collection. Yes, it was probably a bit more than what I wanted to pay (most of the sweaters are $150 and up), but these are sweaters that retail for like $500 and up, so it ends up being a pretty good deal. At least, that's what I like to tell myself.
America's Next Top Model recap
From last week's preview, I knew this week's episode of America's Next Top Model would include a scene where all of the girls gang up on Kim for talking about them behind their backs. I was a bit taken aback, however, when the scene turned into full-on Kim-hatin'. And then I got worried, because when they feature a girl a lot, she's in danger of getting kicked off. Kim seemed genuinely upset about all of this, cried, apologized, and even wrote a letter of apology to Nik. Meanwhile, Bree cradled her head and told her to "give some lovin' to Mama" or something ridiculous, while later, deviously, saying how she was keeping her eneimes closer. (If you could see me right now, I'm rolling my eyes.) Anyway, after last week's cruelly delivered "We're going to London" announcement, the girls were kind of in limbo about when they were actually going to go. First they were paid a visit by gender-bending model Jenny Shmizu, then they learned that the paparazzi would always be watching them when they become famous (riiiight), and then they had to do "one last photo shoot," where they were judged on how good their passport photo was. Personally, I thought Kim's was the best, but somehow Bree, who looked kind of retarded in her photo, won. (It seemed random at the time, but we learned where this came from later: Young Tyra was sitting on a trans-Atlantic flight next to photographer, and since she didn't have her portfolio with her, she booked a job based solely on her passport photo.) So they arrive in London, and immediately they have "paparazzi" following them as they try to check in to their hotel. Lisa tries to be all Lindsay Lohan about it by covering her face, but everyone else handled it pretty good naturedly. Bree's prize for winning the contest was to have dinner with Nik and two handsome, well-spoken British bachelors (probably male escorts or playboys). The next day's photo shoot had a rather complicated conceit involving being naked, having hair and makeup half done, and squeezing all six models into a phone booth. All were brats about it, except for Nicole, who amusingly farted in the booth. Also, Bree was really getting on my nerves, because she pretends to be all high and mighty, but really, she's judgmental and a snob. At judging, Kim was called first (yay!), followed by Bree (yuck!), and while I thought we were going to have a Jayla-Nicole repeat from last week, Lisa and Jayla were in the bottom two, the former for being too crazy and the latter for being too dull. But the judges saw their chance and ran with it, taking the "too crazy" excuse for kicking Lisa off (when, really, we all know that's she's too old and, um, "weathered"). Ding-dong the fug is dead!

Next week, the girls have to pose like statues and get attacked by London's infamous pigeons (this is going to be difficult for me to watch, since I hate pigeons), and Bree and Kim continue their war of the words.
Website of the week
If I were a celebrity, I think the thing I'd enjoy the most is getting free clothes. I've always found this fact of life a bit ironic, because it seems like when you can finally afford designer clothing (well, and you're famous), then you get it for free. Anyway, I think it would be wonderful to call (or have my assistant call) Gucci or Prada or Chanel and get a sexy dress to wear out that night. So I was pleased to read about eDressMe: While their selection isn't super-designer, if you're a Manhattan girl, $20 gets your dress delivered to you by the end of the business day. Convenient, yes, but free, no. Still, this site is great for everything from impromptu cocktail parties to prom dresses to wedding and bridesmaid dresses (LB, this one's for you). You can shop by occasion, or by brand, and the site also carries a selection of separates, shoes, and accessories. Designer brands include Anna Sui, Cynthia Rowley, Jill Stuart, Shoshanna, and Tracy Reese, and there are more than 1,000 dresses on the site, so you're bound to find something you like. I'm in the market for a holiday party dress, so here's what I found. If I were an Olsen twin, I'd wear this cute, poofy Tracy Reese dress. If I were Kirsten Dunst, I'd wear this lace Anna Sui dress. If I were a little gutsier and more confident, I'd wear this hot Betsey Johnson sequined red dress. But since I'm me, I like this simple but sexy green velvet dress the best. I don't know that I quite need it by the end of the day tomorrow, but regular shipping should have it to my place in time for the party season. Sadly, unlike a celebrity, I'll be wearing the same dress to multiple events, but then again, it's not like paparazzi will be taking my picture everywhere either...a good reason not to be famous.
Cheryl Shops for...skinny jeans
Ever since I was so horribly shut out from the Stella McCartney bonanza last week, I've been obsessed with skinny-leg jeans, which I did not have the luxury of trying on (or even buying). Now, we've been seeing skinny jeans (or "stovepipes") for a few months now, mainly on starlets like Lindsay Lohan, Hilary Duff, and Sienna Miller, and for awhile on Kate Moss, who, regardless of whether she has a coke addiction, is still a very stylish woman. Anyway, I grabbed MK and hit Barneys on Saturday on a mission. I enlisted a salesgirl, Stacey, and was soon trying on every pair of straight-leg jeans on the 8th floor. I tried on a ton of pairs by new brands--Rag & Bone, Earnest Sewn, Radcliffe--and while I absolutely loved the Envy from Gold Sign (Adriano Goldschmied's new line), I decided I did not want to cross the $200 threshold for a trend that might be fleeting (if, however, it decides to stick around for awhile, I might cave in, because they're super-flattering, lightweight, and they run huge, which always makes me feel better about myself). I decided to go with Citizens of Humanity's Sienna jean, which, thankfully, was on sale. I'm still not 100% sold on whether they're going to be a lasting trend, but it's nice to have a non-bunchy pair of jeans to tuck into my boots, and MW said I looked sexy, which is always nice to hear. Now my dilemma is what to wear with them: tunics? Sweater coats? Whatever I wear with my normal jeans? I'm taking suggestions...

Sellout Stella
I just got back from the debacle known as Stella McCartney for H&M, and let me tell you, I was about four hours too late. All that was left at the store at 34th and 7th was two racks' worth of clothes, all in size 42 (a 12, according to H&M), which about 30 women were fighting over like the clothes were made out of spun gold. Apparently that store had received three truckloads' worth of clothes. I tried on the black pants and the bubble skirt, both in size 42, both of which fell off my hips. I got lucky, though, and on my second round, I spotted the blue silk cami with rhinestone trim and the teal flutter-sleeve blouse, the former in a 40 and the latter in a 38. (I don't know where they get these sizes from, but I can assure you, I've never worn a size 38 in anything in my life.) The cami is a bit huge on me, but it will be perfect after a visit to my tailor. And the flutter-sleeve blouse is gorgeous. I asked the checkout girl about the display clothes in the window; she said they'd be taking them down first thing in the morning, and whoever was there first would get them. She also said that they might get another shipment tomorrow morning. But otherwise, the collection is completly sold out. Everywhere. Seriously.

For more takes on the situation, here's MK's report, the scene at the Oxford Circus H&M in London, and according to Fashion Wire Daily, fashion editor bitches got first dibs at 8 a.m. this morning. Bitches.

The good news? There are already items for sale on eBay.
MasstigeWatch!
So, tomorrow is the big day! For those of you who find that confusing, the "big day" would be the debut of Stella McCartney's line for H&M. (Funny story: My coworker said to me today, "So are you going before work, at lunch, or after work?" and without her even mentioning H&M, I totally knew what she was talking about.) So here's the deal. You can preview the entire collection here, which is a really nice feature that allows OCD people like me to plot their course of action (I'm interestied in the dress that looks like a bathrobe, the skinny jeans, the blouson sweater, and the metal mesh belt). There are 40 pieces in all, and all are for women (sorry, boys). Stores open at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning; I'm going before work (I think), so expect a report by the end of the day. Here are the stores in the U.S. that are carrying the line:

640 Fifth Avenue, at 51st Street, NYC
731 Lexington Avenue, at 59th Street, NYC
435 Seventh Avenue, at 34th Street, NYC
1328 Broadway, at 34th Street, NYC
558 Broadway Soho, NYC
515 Broadway Soho, NYC
1530 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia
1025 F Street, Washington, D.C.
840 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago
350 Washington Avenue, Boston
150 Powell Street, San Francisco (starting November 19)
150 Post Street, San Francisco (starting November 19)

Good luck and godspeed.
America's Next Top Model recap
There was an interesting (and kind of mean) article in the Times on Sunday, about how America's Next Top Model is unrealistic, because all the contestants are too old, too fat, and too American (yes, the world at large really does hate us) to be actual top models. And while this article is clearly, as my coworker AW would say, "yucking my yum," it has a point. Of course, I'm still going to keep watching it forever, but this week's episode of America's Next Top Model was just so exemplary of how the modeling world as portrayed on the show is nothing like the real modeling world. But I did laugh a lot this week, at least. The episode started off with the girls visiting season three winner Eva at a photo shoot for Elle Girl (sponsor alert!). Eva basically gave the girls a big pep talk in her fake, diva-esque way, and that somehow got them all fired up to win. And the girls were irritated with Lisa because while they were all sitting around looking bored, Lisa was (smartly) talking up the stylists and makeup artists. Later that night, Lisa lost a few more fries from her Happy Meal and tried to cheer up the girls by dressing in some incredibly kooky costumes. Right. The next day, the girls got to pick out an "entourage" of stylists and makeup artists who, of course, used (sponsor alert!) Cover Girl cosmetics. (Note to Tyra: the people who get you ready for a photo shoot are your "team"; your "entourage" is a group of hangers-on who, like, come with you to clubs and stuff.) The point of this is that the girls then had to go to a go-see for a walk-on role on (sponsor alert!) UPN's Veronica Mars show. Here's where that "reality/non-reality" thing comes in: Instead of reading lines like one would normally do at an audition, the girls had to make a collage and explain it to the casting director, who, in the real world, would also be hitting on everyone. Lisa was on the verge of tears, which quickly alterted the casting people to the fact that she's bananas, and, happily, Kim won the challenge! (I'm DVRing Veronica Mars as we speak!) The photo shoot, which I'm not going to go into too much detail about, involved screaming, crazy wardrobe, and the guys from MTV's Wildboyz. And when the boyz appeared to be paying too much attention to Nicole, Lisa, eager to grab the spotlight, borrowed one of the guys' stunt diapers and actually peed in it. Did I mention she's bananas? So, at judging, the girls had to pose with stuff and improvise a commercial, which was all very dumb. Then Tyra did one of the cruellest things I've ever seen her do. It was down to Jayla and Nicole at the end, and just as it was beginning to appear that they were both being sent home, Tyra told them they both had to pack their bags because...they were all going to London! Ha! Cue streamers and marching Buckingham Palace guards. Um, right. I thought Kim was going to bitch-slap Tyra. That was really, really cruel. But, hey, the good news is that they're going to London, which actually has a fashion scene (as opposed to, say, South Africa). I was afraid they were going to get sent to some random place like Singapore.

So, next week, the girls gang up on Kim for being a gossip. Um, like Jayla should be so judgmental...

After three and a half awesome years in my current West Village apartment, I am ready to move on. Well, not totally--I love my apartment, but MW and I have decided to move in together, which requires that I move out of my apartment (which is a studio and thus too small for the two of us). I think we've found a new place, and while it's not quite ours yet (long story), I'm already thinking about decorating it. Yes, I know, you're thinking, "Way to put the cart before the horse, Cheryl." But I can't help it. For example, since this place has such a big living room, I want to get a sectional sofa (or as MW calls it, a "sexual sofa"). And the living room has these sconces on the wall for lighting, which is nice in theory, but the fixtures are so not my taste. And since the closet space is not great, MW and I are going to need a big dresser for the bedroom. So after my boss caught me browsing Room and Board's site while I should've been, um, working, he instead referred me to HomePortfolio, the most comprehensive furnishings-and-fixtures home site I've ever seen. Seriously, you can find anything from bathroom tiles to Louis XIV-style chairs. Aside from the sheer volume of products, which is very helpful for people like me who value selection, the cool part is that this stie is a resource only--nothing here is for sale, although they will refer you to where you can buy everything. In other words, the site is an incredibly in-depth free resource for researching furniture, fixtures, objets d'art, etc. You can browse by category, brand, or room, or search for something specific; for example, I know Artemide makes nice light fixtures, so I found this lovely sconce. I also found this awesome sectional sofa that's, sadly, a little too awesome for our budget (of course, I also like the Chelsea, a slightly more tolerable model from Room & Board). Now, the really fun part about this site is that you can create a portfolio (uh, hence the name of the site) and basically create your dream house. (They say you can use it to show your friends or your designer, but, come on, we know it's all for fun.) So now we all know what I'll be doing for the next few weeks. A girl can dream, right?

When did J.Crew get cute?
Ever since college, I have lived in fear of J.Crew. This was not because the preppy retailer's clothes were ubiquituous on my college campus (although they were); rather, I was always spooked out beyond belief, because whenever I arrived in my new dorm room, there was a brand new J.Crew catalogue with my name on it waiting for me. It's like J.Crew knew where I was living before I did. J.Crew then fell on some hard times, but Mickey Drexler, the former head of Gap Inc., has since taken over and the company's sales have definitely rebounded. Still a bit afraid of the 'Crew, I've tried to ignore them as much as possible, but even though I was freaked out to see a catalogue in my mailbox last week, I decided to flip through it in the name of research. And I'm glad I did, because, damn, the clothes are cute. Gone are the random color names (moss, pond, etc.); and instead of shapless basics, J.Crew now offers modern, stylish takes on preppy classics. H&M it ain't, but that's exactly the point. And while I'm hesitant to order anything, for fear I'll get a new catalogue every week like I used to in college, I think I might just have to bite my tongue and get on with it. I love this Wellesley cable blazer, a kind of hybrid between the cable-knit cardigan and the blazer (Isli makes a similar version for $368). The beaded officer jacket is a little trendier (and more expensive), but the beading is adorable and helps to soften the military styling. I hate to say it, but it's almost better than anything Marc Jacobs could do. Speaking of Marc, this ballet flat reminds me of the quilted style he put out for fall--except I like this one way better, because it's a bit less trendy and more classic, meaning you can wear it for more than one season, without people saying, "Isn't that the Marc ballet flat from fall 2005?" Even the flannel-lined chino, a J.Crew classic, looks fresh to me--instead of a boring plaid, the flannel lining is a fun cherry print. I was also pleased to find that, just like they used to, J.Crew still offers $20 off your $100 order with a coupon from the catalogue. Because not only does J.Crew always know where I live, they also know I'm a sucker for coupons.
Five things I learned on tonight's otherwise useless recap episode of America's Next Top Model

1. Kim has mad harmonica skills. (Well, not really...)

2. Nicole is hilarious. Why they choose to portray her as this boring, sullen teenager, I have no idea.

3. Coryn wrote Lisa a note of apology after the "drunk bitch" episode, and the girls kissed (literally) and made up.

4. Lisa comes across as wacky, not bitchy. Her exercise routine around the house was particularly amusing.

5. The true bitch in the house is...Jayla! With her no-inner-monologue comments, she started pissing off the other girls from day one. Funny how, for some reason, the bitchiness wasn't shown on camera until the "I sleep with a nightlight" incident. Conspiracy?

Thankfully, next week is the first week of sweeps, so the show will be back with a brand-new episode, in which the girls meet Eva the Diva and frolic with Wildboyz for a photo shoot. Also, I'd like to note that Kim was voted Cover Girl of the Week. I swelled with pride. Yay, Kim!
Website of the week
This week's website of the week is in honor of Halloween, which was yesterday, but at lunch today, I heard all about the big Goth ball that was transported to NYC from New Orleans, where it usually takes place. (Believe it or not, one of my coworkers is way into the Goth scene--who knew?) Goth has been a big buzzword this fall, with magazines citing Marc Jacobs and Rochas' fall collections repeatedly (it also ties in to that whole Edwardian trend). So after reading a story in the October W, I knew I had to make D.L. & Company website of the week. The creator, Douglas Little, is a bit bananas, but in a cool, accessible way. His line got its start with a line of candles scented with poisonous flowers like Thorn Apple, Mandrake, and Oleander (the candles themselves aren't poisonous, obviously--he's not that Goth). These candles are fancy-schmancy and come in very intricate packaging--which at least helps to justify their $75-$125 cost, prices at which Diptyque candles start to look like a bargain. Anyway, you can read all about the candles on the site--the scents and the packaging. On the website (which, sorry, is all in Flash, so I can't link to anything in particular), D.L. & Co. has branched out into skull plates and paperweights, candy jars, skull stationery, and a candle inspired by the upcoming Memoirs of a Geisha movie. (And, coming soon, a collaboration with Harry Winston for a fine jewelry line.) Sadly, you can't shop online, but there is a very extensive selection of retailers listed, and if there still aren't stores close to you, Barneys.com carries many of the candles. For those of you actually in NYC, the Barneys on Madison Avenue reportedly has a whole D.L. & Co. boutique installed in the Chelsea Passage section on the 9th floor (aside from candles and skulls, you can reportedly buy vintage coffins and other vampire-friendly wares). Think of the line as a nice way to dabble in Goth--without powdering your skin and adopting an all-black wardrobe.
