Object of Desire: Proenza Schouler PS1 Bag
Proenza Schouler has been in the news recently more because of Kiefer Sutherland's head-butting of co-designer Jack McCullough's nose, but the duo definitely deserve attention for their new line of handbags. Which, if you think about it, is kind of ironic, because unlike the flashy, logo-heavy designs of the past decade, Proenza Schouler's PS1 bags are understated, clean, and almost anonymous--which is key in these recessionary times, where flaunting one's luxury accessories is seriously declassé. The bags are, however, quite luxurious, with prices to match: a small leather clutch is $895, medium day bags are $1595, and large bags are $1995; python versions of these range from $1735 to $4250. All are gorgeous, of course, but if you want to really splurge, why not go for the $14,400 large PS1 croc bag? Yes, for that price you could get a Birkin, but the PS1 doesn't have a years-long waiting list, nor does it shout conspicuous consumption. With its crossbody strap, it's also much more youthful--a sought-after quality among the fashion flock. It bags may be dead--or perhaps hibernating--but if there's any bag that can rouse us from our deep sleep, I think it's the PS1.

It reminds me of a lawyer's satchel or old school breifcase.
