Object of Desire: Stella McCartney over-the-knee boots
Ironically, as the weather in NYC has finally started to warm up, I've started thinking about fall. Crazy, I know. But fall's runways were all about the legs, and one item that just kept cropping up everywhere was thigh-high boots. Seriously, if there's one item worth investing in for fall, it's boots, and be prepared to wear them with everything from dresses to boyfriend shirts and blazers (hey, who needs pants anymore?). Over-the-knee boots are slowly starting to trickle into the stores (expect more later in July and August as stores clear out their spring/summer merchandise), and one of the first to arrive is Stella McCartney's over-the-knee boots. Yes, they're faux leather, but being owned by the Gucci Group has its advantages--all of her shoes (and bags) are manufactured in Gucci's Italian factories, so the quality is high, from the balance in the sole to the fit in the leg. While not exactly a bargain, the boots are a fairly good value for the money, and keep in mind that real leather boots will be significantly more expensive. They're also, obviously, animal-friendly, if that's your thing. The boots aren't in stores yet (they're only available for pre-order), but that will hopefully give you enough time to save up for a pair.

It doesn't hit stores for another two months, but Target has released photos of the Gossip Girl-inspired Anna Sui Designer Collaboration, and The Cut has 'em all. I think the Blair outfits are the most true to the character, but, surprisingly, I liked the Jenny outfits the best (the one at the right is my favorite). The collection definitely looks very Anna Sui, and, as Nylon points out, a lot of the looks are recycled from the runway. Hey, no complaints here! The Anna Sui Designer Collaborations line lands in select Target stores September 13th.

A style ode to Michael Jackson
I've been feeling incredulous and bewildered since about 5 p.m. tonight. Having grown up in the '80s, Michael Jackson was a huge, integral part of my childhood. Thriller was one of the first records I bought (and, yes, I still own the actual record), and I taught myself (though videotape and mirror) the dances to "Thriller" and "Bad." I'm at a loss for words as to explain how weird and sad I feel about him passing away, so instead I'll offer a tribute in the best way I can think of: through fashion. Michael is clearly an influence on fashion at the moment--specifically, at Christophe Decarnin's Balmain, and, generally, within the whole '80s revival--but when it comes down to his signature look, iconic is the word that comes to mind. So, I present the fedora, sequined jacket, white V-neck T-shirt, black skinny pants, white socks, and black penny loafers. Rest in peace, MJ.

TheFind Guest Post: Call of The Wild: Leopard Print Handbags Return for Fall 2009

leopardhandbags

As a tribute to the new fall season which is flowing into stores as we speak, the leopard print accessory is on the prowl again. Love 'em or hate 'em leopard print is the trend that seems to return with out fail. If used sparingly leopard print handbags add some graphic interest to your favorite LBD or all black ensemble. The Jimmy Choo Mandah hobo bag is patched with solid leather which diffuses the leopard print to prevent leopard print overload. Look for graphic batik or faded leopard prints which pair rather nicely with denim such as the Lauren Merkin 'Eve' clutch.

Shown here are some picks for leopard print handbags (from top to bottom):

Christian Louboutin Leopard-Print Pony Fur Clutch - Leopard, $940.00 at Saks.com
Yves Saint Laurent Palma Leopard Print Canvas Tote, $599.99, at Overstock.com
Jimmy Choo Mandah hobo bag, $3,495 at Net-a-Porter
Lauren Merkin Eve Leopard Print Fabric Clutch, $165 at Bloomingdales.com
Anya Hindmarch Leopard Print Clutch by, $172.00 at Vivre
Yves Saint Laurent Muse Two bag, $2,295 at Net-a-Porter

Recommended Reading: Sea of Shoes
Staying on top of all the fashion blogs out there is practically a full-time job. I like to think I'm pretty well-informed, but all of a sudden I'll start hearing about one everywhere, and then I'm shocked (and maybe a little perturbed) that I haven't heard about it before. Kind of like when you're wearing wide-leg jeans and everyone else in the room is wearing skinny jeans--how did I miss the memo? Anyway, after reading about the blog Sea of Shoes twice in two days--it's one of the blogs featured in Holt Renfrew's blogger windows [subscription required], and now its creator, Jane Aldridge, is designing a line of shoes for Urban Outfitters--I decided to check it out. Sea of Shoes is beautifully photographed, à la Garance Doré or the Sartorialist and primarily features its writer-creator, the aforementioned Ms. Aldridge, in creative, thoughtful outfits, à la Fashion Toast, paying particular attention to her shoes. But what's really remarkable about Sea of Shoes is that Jane, its writer, is 17 years old. That's right, she's in high school. While you wrap your head around that one, I can tell you that, from reading this article, Jane comes from good pedigree--her mother, Judy, is a model-turned-designer and the only "fashion person" she knows in real life, as she lives in suburban Dallas. Jane's incredibly precocious tastes tend toward the more avant garde Belgian and Japanese designers, but I find it interesting how she integrates these edgy shoes into her wardrobe, which leans more ladylike. The writing is more mature than you'd expect, but the focus is definitely the photos, and the spectacular styling featured therein. Did I mention she's 17?

As for her shoe collection, it's mini--just three styles--and hits Urban Outfitters July 15th. The most promising pair, in my opinion, is the brown lace-up boot. I can't wait to see how Jane wears them.

In case you haven't heard already, Jimmy Choo is designing a line for H&M. Featuring shoes for men and women, plus handbags and eveningwear, the pairing is noteworthy for two major reasons. For one, it marks H&M's first designer accessories collaboration—while previous ventures have been primarily clothes collections that included accessories, this one is primarily accessories, with a few clothes. And, secondly, Jimmy Choo is one of the three major players in the Designer Shoe Trifecta (the other two being Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin), and so this is a major score on H&M's part. The line hits stores November 14th, with prices for shoes at roughly $55-$138 (40-100 Euros) and bags going up to $276 (200E). Considering most Choos retail for $495-$795, this excellent news. This photo, from WWD [subscription required], is the only one available thus far, but as soon as more images turn up, I will of course post them here.

Kind of makes Carlos Falchi's collection for Target seem anti-climactic, doesn't it?
CFDA Awards fashion report
When it comes to Hollywood red carpet events like the Oscars and the Golden Globes, celebrities tend to play it painfully safe, knowing that one fashion misstep can result in at least a week's drubbing in the press. Yes, it's nice to see the celebs looking so lovely, but I wish they took more risks. Thankfully, when it comes to the fashion industry's own red carpet events, the attendees take far more risks; the designers are in front of their peers, after all, and if there's ever a time to prance around like a peacock, this is it. While the CFDA awards aren't nearly as dressy as the Costume Institute Gala, there's definitely a lot to comment on. So, on with it.

Best all-around: Michael Kors
No one is more surprised about this than I am, but I must say, I loved every Michael Kors outfit on the red carpet. The chic simplicity of his designs was just perfect for this occasion. From the now-raven-haired Coco Rocha to the super-chic Lauren Santo Domingo to the usually-a-disaster Heidi Klum and the most-improved Blake Lively, color me impressed, Mr. Kors!

Best but not totally creative: Celebrities
I was kind of hoping womenswear winners Rodarte would bring Reese Witherspoon instead, but Kirsten Dunst was a good choice.

Best by default: Bring a hot model
Sure, Diane Kruger looks great in everything, but she definitely brings some sex appeal to her Jason Wu dress. And, I'm wondering if Alexander Wang hopes we're looking at Dree Hemingway instead of at his shorts tuxedo. Works for me.

Best advertising for your brand: You, the designer
Sophie Buhai and and Lisa Mayock (with Erin Fetherston in the middle) always look adorable, and that makes me want to buy their Vena Cava dresses. Also, check out Yeohlee Teng, who remains the minimalist-chic personification of her label.

Worst deja vu: Fabric overload
If it didn't work for Leighton Meester...I'm sorry, Lake Bell, but Vuitton is not working for you either. I feel like these coquette-on-steroids looks were not really meant to be worn in public.

Worst impractical trend: Balmania
I love Balmain as much as the next girl, but I draw the line at dresses that are so short that my ass cheeks hang out and so tight I can't sit down in them. I'm guessing Julia Restoin-Roitfeld isn't wearing tights just because she's cold. Ahem.

Worst Yikes: Turn down the volume
What is going on with Molly Sims' dress? I don't even know where to start. The skirt? The bodice? Wow. Just, wow.

Worst example of how the fashion industry can't dress normal women: Doutzen Kroes
Seriously, this woman is gorgeous. Is it so hard to put her in a flattering dress?

My breakfast with Tory Burch
I will admit that when I think of Tory Burch, the first thing that comes to mind is those ubiquitous flats. You know, the elastic ballet flats with the round gold logo, the ones I've spotted on the feet of everyone from Upper East Side 12-year-olds to suburban housewives; the ones that have become a Gossip Girl punchline. There is no denying that Burch is a coveted label: Women waited for four hours to get into the opening day of her sample sale--a scene so bananas, the cops were called. So when I was invited for morning coffee at her Meatpacking District store, I decided to go, if only to investigate what, exactly, makes Tory Burch so damn popular. I expected to peruse the racks, chit-chat with the PR girls, have a cup of coffee, and be on my merry way after 20 minutes or so. I did not expect Tory Burch to show up. But she did.

Not only did Tory show up--apologizing for being late (she wasn't) and bemoaning the bags under her eyes (there were none)--but she shook my hand, took my business card, and promised to check out my blog. She then proceeded to give the crowd of bloggers an informal but enthusiastic presentation of her favorite items in the store, including handbags (a new focus for the brand), costume jewelry, the summer collection, and the pre-fall collection (inspired by Venice). She started pulling stuff from the racks, she answered everyone's questions, she made self-deprecating jokes...in other words, she was completely lovely. She also--in case you were wondering--stressed that the brand was trying to move away from That Logo, which is definitely welcome news.

This is a new logo that will start popping up this summer; it's based on her father's monogram.

But if you like the circle-T logo, fear not. It still turns up--albeit on a smaller scale--in bags like this one, a convertible tote with an adjustable strap (Tory said it's a bestseller this season).

The genius of Tory Burch is that she finds a way to adapt fashion-forward trends into a totally wearable manner. Take these shoes--they're a neutral camel color with fun silver trim and a shock of bright neon pink. They're somehow trendy and conservative at the same time, and I totally want them.

Or, take these belts. I know I personally have a weakness for faceted studs, but these are so much more refined. They're "I live west of Park Avenue," not "I live in a fifth-floor walkup on the Lower East Side."

Tory obviously loves to travel, and I like that she incorporates it into her collections. This scarf, for example, was made in India (where she'll be going this summer with her design team, to do research for next spring's collection).

So, what makes Tory Burch so popular? As I said earlier, she takes trendy elements and adapts them to fit her style, which is smart--sometimes we as New Yorkers forget that we live in a hyper-trendy fashion bubble; fashion trends can be severe and scary, but she manages to make them accessible by blending them in well with her signature aesthetic, which I think is actually neo-preppy. It's not traditionally preppy as in whale patterns and Madras, but it's a natural outgrowth of it, with the prints, tunics, canvas bags, and gold accents. Her clothes are colorful and happy, and we forget that most women want to look feminine and classic, not moody and subversive (again, New York fashion bubble). The other thing that makes Tory so appealing is that she is the perfect representative of her brand. She seems to Have It All: She's a successful businesswoman and she balances that with family (she mentioned her sons several times during the presentation), not to mention, she's totally adorable and utterly stylish (I was drooling over her green velvet and bamboo platform sandals, which are part of the fall collection). And isn't that what women nowadays want?
MasstigeWatch!
Having worked with Adidas, H&M, and Target (in Australia), Stella McCartney is no stranger to mass-market collaborations. So it makes sense for her to partner with Gap to create a children's line [subscription required]. It hits select Gap stores in the U.S., U.K., France, Ireland, and Japan later this year.

Speaking of the Gap, Racked reports that the Design Editions will be hitting the 5th Avenue flagship (at 54th St.) at 10:30 next Tuesday, 6/16. As a bonus, the designers--Patrick Robinson, Alexander Wang, Albertus Swanepoel and Vena Cava's Lisa Maycock and Sophie Buhai--will be there to celebrate (and maybe offer tips!). But if you can't make it to Midtown, don't despair; it hits other Gap stores the following day, 6/17.

Finally, if you missed Uniqlo's masstige extravaganza earlier this spring, they still have multiple racks of Shipley & Halmos dresses on sale for $39.99 (the jersey dresses are still regular price, at $39.50). The sale dresses are polyester, but they were rather cute, and I am a firm believer that a girl can never have too many little black dresses.
Weekend shopping notes
If you've been following my Twitter feed, you know that today I went to Save Fashion, Refinery 29's month-long sample sale at Port Authority. I had been once before, but since the sale was extended an extra two weeks, with additional discounts, I went back for more today...and let's just say good things come to those who wait. There's still a lot of Rogan, Acne Jeans, Cardigan by Lynn Hiriak, Filippa K, Earnest Sewn, and VPL left, among other designers. The racks are kind of a mess, and you'll definitely have to dig, but there are definitely treasures to be unearthed. Case in point: I got a jacket, top, and skirt all by Rick Owens (yes, Rick Owens), for $66. Tomorrow, 6/12 is the last day of the sale, so hurry! It's open 10-8 at 641 8th Ave. (at 41st St.).

If department stores are more your style, it's Friends & Family time at Lord & Taylor. Coupon is at right; you get 25% off everything except for makeup and fragrance, which is 10% off (still a good deal!). You can also use the code FRIENDS online.

Finally, if high-street stores are your thing, H&M is having a summer sale, with prices starting at $5.

Happy weekend shopping!
Au revoir, eLuxury.com
Contrary to what the Fed says, the economy is still not in the best shape. Restaurants, bars, and stores (Racked reports the LES's Shop is the latest casualty) continue to close, and businesses continue to fold. LVMH announced back in January that eLuxury would cease its retail operations [subscription required], a move that surprised many. eLuxury launched way back in 2000 and had been a pioneering--and long-lasting--online retailer. Profits in 2007 and 2008 had also reportedly been very good, which made the decision all the more puzzling--although the current state of the economy most likely was a strong factor. What's really weird is that instead of shuttering the site completely, LVMH will continue to operate eLuxury as an editorial site, most likely extolling the virtues of LVMH brands (like Vuitton and Dior). But until that happens--June 26, to be exact--eLuxury is having a fantastic sale. Currently, select sale accessories are an additional 40% off, with free shipping on orders over $100; I suggest following eLuxury's Twitter feed for advance notice on sales (as well as the most up-to-date info). Of course, all sales are final. But considering that you can get, say, this Zac Posen Aster tote for $420--that's 77% off its original price--who needs returns? eLuxury est mort, vive eLuxury!

UPDATE: Okay, so the discount doesn't apply to handbags, but it does apply to jewelry, watches, sunglasses, belts, scarves, and hats. Also, beauty items are now 60% off. Handbag sale, I'm waiting.

Buy It: Alexander Wang's "you look skinny" muscle tee
When it comes to my appearance, the best compliment you can pay me is, "You look skinny." Which probably offers a deeper-than-expected view into my psyche, but whatever, this is my blog. I've heard "You look skinny" several times from several different people in the last few months, and I can only come to two conclusions: One, my body has become leaner due to Core Fusion classes at Exhale (I don't normally cover fitness on Cheryl Shops, but if anyone wants to hear about my experience with Core Fusion, I will gladly write about it--leave a comment or email me). The other is that whenever people have recently told me I looked skinny, I've been wearing a T-shirt from T by Alexander Wang. I know I have sung the praises of Wang before. And you may argue that any old T-shirt is just as good, but I genuinely believe that Wang's muscle tee is worth the price. Yes, any factory in China can reproduce a similar shape, in a similarly slinky jersey, for $20 or so. But Wang's tee is cut precisely to flatter: The neckline lays perfectly at the top of your décolletage, the sleeves cut across the upper arm at just the right angle, and the fluid, draped fit skims your body without being clingy. And I can't think of anything else in my wardrobe that makes me feel sexier. So, in the vein of Master Card's commercials: Alexander Wang's muscle tee: $78. Everyone telling you that you look skinny: priceless.

You know the vacant Brooks Brothers store at 53rd St. and Fifth Avenue? The Post reports that Topshop, Uniqlo, Century 21, Forever 21, and Zara are all duking it out over the space. Zara already has a smaller store across the street (Mango would reportedly take over that space if Zara wins the lease), and Forever 21 is opening a new location not too far away in Times Square; I'm puzzled by Century 21's interest in the space (it seems far too small); and while I love Uniqlo, I feel like it would do better on Lower Fifth Avenue, in the Flatiron area. My money is on Topshop; their Soho store is already incredibly successful, and Sir Philip Green has said before that he wants to have a Topshop wherever there's an H&M. Regardless, whoever ends up with the lease, let's hope they can afford the annual rent-—which is reportedly a cool $30 million. That's a lot of T-shirts and skinny jeans.

There's an interesting story in Crain's New York about how retailers are cutting plus size lines left and right. Industry stigmas aside, this decision appears to be purely economic: Plus-size sales are down 12% (as opposed to 2% for standard sizes), and plus-size clothes cost an estimated 10% more to produce. What doesn't make sense, however, is that, as Jezebel explains, 56% of American women are plus-sized; you'd think this would be a growing segment of the business. The Crain's article infers that plus-size customers in general appear to be more closely affected by the recession and are thus being more conservative about their clothing spending. Which, while not great for the fashion and retail industries, is actually pretty wise.

Finally, I am a bit behind on my fashion-blog reading, but the fashion blogosphere is all in a tizzy over Susie Bubble's post on Style Bubble. Apparently the super-awesome Bubble posted pictures of herself trying on a jumpsuit by UK designer Pam Hogg (Racked has the photos, which are adorable); Hogg's people didn't approve of the photography and asked her to take it down; Bubble did, but felt stung and hurt. In a way, the situation is not surprising, as designers like to control their brand image with an iron fist, and thus are liable to freak out about any "unauthorized" photography. Then again, Bubble genuinely loves fashion and enthusiastically champions young and independent designers--not to mention the fact that her blog, which has a large, loyal audience, is great exposure for any designer. The takeaway: Fitting-room photography is a no-no.
